The rules

How to play

1

Scratch a line on the ground.

2

Divide into two equal teams and line up on opposite sides.

3

In the classic form, teams grip a thick rope and pull on the referee's signal.

4

Without a rope: teams interlock hands in a human chain, the last player at each end holds a fixed post or tree, and teams lean back and pull together.

5

The team that drags the other side's front player across the centre line wins.

6

Best of three rounds.

7

Balance teams by weight and size to keep it fair.

Keep it fair

Mark the centre line clearly before starting. Agree that the front player's leading foot crossing the line counts as a win, no need to drag the whole team over.
